Although Borneo has lost ~50% of its original rainforest since 1969 it still offers up some of the most incredible wildlife viewing opportunities I've ever experienced.
↟.
This baby Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) was so close to our boat, along a small tributary of the Kinabatangan River, it felt like I could almost reach out and touch it. 🐒
↟.
Life in these forests is incredibly rich, although much of is being lost at incalculable rate.
↟.
The culprit...the highly productive crop, Palm Oil. 🙊
↟.
Check to see if the everyday items you're using contain this product. its convenience comes at quite a cost, a cost thats costing us some of the most critical habitat for life on this planet.
↟.
Avoid uncertified palm oil to make sure your products are sourced from legal inputs.

Braiding through dense lowland rainforest this small tributary of the Kinabatangan River, is home to the largest crocodilian in the world.
↟.
The Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is a stealthy, hypercarnivorous apex predator, capable of navigating murky waters. Hunting by ambushing its prey, large males have been recorded up to 20 feet long. 🐊
↟.
These massive predators date back to the dinosaurs, and are capable of prevailing over nearly any animal within their territory. ↟.
By drowning the unsuspecting prey, and swallowing them whole, these animals are not to be trifled with.
↟.
Within their range on the Kinabatangan River, Saltwater Crocodiles readily take monkeys and bearded pigs for meals. 🐊
↟.
Luckily, we kept our arms and legs inside the boat at pretty much all times so we weren't added to the menu ;)

As we gently rocked back and forth photographing birds along the Kinabatangan River in Borneo, several other boats whizzed by us down river.
↟.
Where were they all heading? Well, we followed them to see, although we did have our suspicions.
↟.
When we rounded a turn in the river, our eyes were wide with excitement. ↟.
A herd of about fifteen Bornean Pygmy Elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis) were foraging for grasses, and drinking water along the river's edge. So relaxed and seemingly unperturbed by our presence, we sat photographing, and appreciating these gentle giants. 🐘
↟.
These endangered species are the smallest of the asian elephants, and also the least understood. I'm grateful to have gotten a chance to spend some time with them, in the wild, and on their own terms.

Good morning everybody!

Today's post features a follow up from our last image about the Bornean Gibbons!
↟.
While we were sweating in the humid understory and watching the Gibbon family, a whole other scene was happening just over our heads. Large flashes of orange, black and white streamed through the canopy accompanied by loud raucous calls coming from a large fruiting fig nearby. ↟.
What we were witnessing, were our first looks at a group of Rhinoceros Hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros borneoensis) feeding and socializing above us. ↟.
This is one of the most charismatic of the eight species of hornbills found in Borneo, and certainly one whose calls I will remember for a long time to come.
↟.
Of all the places I've explored, Borneo, is one for the books. The sheer quantity of wildlife on this island is mind-blowing and unlike anything I have yet to experience. Grateful for our amazing guides who made the whole experience amazing!

Of the twelve species of primates, the Bornean Gibbon (Hylobates muelleri) is one of two that are considered Lesser Apes, meaning they lack tails. ↟
With a population around 100,000 individuals left in the wild, this special species of primate is not easy to see. Luckily for us we were in one of the best locations to see them, and with our guide Danny who has been studying as part of his ongoing research.
↟
Although I captured a peaceful moment in this family group, I was frantically trying to make my way back to an avian subject who was posing nicely for me. Tune in to the next post to unravel who it was!

The Danum Valley in Borneo, is by far one of the most incredible ecosystems I’ve ever witnessed.  Teeming with wildlife, during both day night. ↟.
The subject in this image was observed during one of our night walks in the Danum Valley Conservation area. We were traipsing along the trail, looking for insects, owls, lizards, night frogs, fish, and just about anything that caught our attention or curiosity.
↟.
After a successful viewing of a juvenile Brown-Wood Owl in the mid-canopy, we were alerted to the presence another nearly silent hunter of the forest. Except this one didn’t have feathers. 😮
↟. Our amazing guide Danny and myself had completely walked by a giant serpent on the ground, when Aaron exclaimed what his eyes had gazed upon.  It was a Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus) laying quietly on the floor of this humid lowland rainforest, its evolution dating back 140 million years.
↟. As we looked down in awe and surprise, this silent giant, remained nearly motionless. We marveled in the beauty of this powerful hunter, unperturbed by our presence.  Our headlamps traced it’s long, muscular body, while its curves wove through the understory. ✨
↟. This massive predator is a type of constrictor, which hunts its prey by slowly squeezing the life out of it, dislocating its lower jaw, and swallowing its prey whole.
↟. This is the largest species of snake in the world, and this individual was between 13-15 feet long, hard to get an accurate measurement with all the twists and coils of this beauty.
↟.
I guess you gotta mind your footing in the rainforest ;)

Let me introduce you to the Buffy-Fish Owl (Ketupa ketupu)
↟.
During the day, this owl sits solely perched in the darkest parts of the forest. But as the suns pull on the day fades, creatures of the night like the Buffy-Fish Owl begin the evening hunting.
↟.
Often seen perched on tree limbs overhanging rivers, the Buffy-Fish Owl hunts for its namesake prey. However, like most owls, it gains its calories from a variety of prey items including crabs, frogs, reptiles, toads and crayfish.
↟.
Although relatively common within its range, this beautiful ninja of the night, has the animals of the rainforest scurrying with fright!

Since today is Halloween, @birdsbybijs is pulling out some spookies from the vault! 👻

Today's final #Spooktober postings will feature three images from the depths of the dark, ancient rainforests of Borneo.
↟.
First up, is the Phillipine Slow Loris (Nycticebus menagensis), a nocturnal mammal found in Borneo and parts of the Sulu Archipelago.
↟.
These nocturnal mammals, are equipped with large eyes, dexterous fingers, and hunt for insects and feed on gum from woody vines called lianas.
↟.
Listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, these incredible creatures are relatively rare to see, and posses some amazing adaptations to surviving in the harsh rainforest.
↟.
"Slow lorises have a toxic bite, a trait rare among mammals and unique to lorisid primates. The toxin is obtained by licking a sexual gland on their arm, and the secretion is activated by mixing with saliva. Their toxic bite is a deterrent to predators, and the toxin is also applied to the fur during grooming as a form of protection for their infants."

In the shadows of the understory lurks a bird. A bird so furtive and secretive, only the sweetest of whispers will bring it into view. Of the nine pitta species in Borneo, this Black-Crowned Pitta (Erythropitta ussheri) is the only species endemic the Malaysian state of Sabah.

Although populations throughout Borneo can persist in selectively logged and overgrown Rubber plantations, this species has taken noticeable population declines due to the relatively recent explosion in deforestation and habitat loss regionally. The main culprit? Unsustainable Palm Oil.
↟.
In a recent article by National Geographic magazine,16,000 square miles of rain forest on Borneo has been logged since 1973. Shared by Malaysia and Indonesia, Borneo, has been logged, burned, and bulldozed to make way for oil palm. Deforestation here accounts for a fifth of the total deforestation on Borneo since 1973—and for 47 percent since 2000."

As the sun begins to set, a change of guard occurs at the Gomantong Caves in Borneo.
↟.
Millions of bats, exit en masse from their roosting sites and take to the skies shrieking and shrilling. A massive daily exodus of flying mammals depart from the cave system, echo-locating in the day's passing light. ↟.
Snatching insects in the darkening sky, attracts others, larger, looking to snatch some bats in the darkening sky.
↟.
Bat Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, and Wallace's Hawk Eagles took to the skies for an aerial pursuit, while this small family group of Bushy-crested Hornbills soared into the large textured vines adorning the cave's entrance.
↟.
When I saw this image forming I did what any photographer would do, and began to get into position. ↟.
I adjusted my ISO, stabilized my rig on the boardwalk handrail, and held my breath as I focused on my targets and let the slow shutters drop. ↟.
These conditions pushed the limits of my gear, as the low-light in the tropics often does, but I was so pleased with the way this came out!

As the clouds hung low after an afternoon rainstorm in Danum Valley, this Whiskered Treeswift (Hemiprocne comata) perched on a nearby electrical wire. Making frequent sallies out over the grassy area, this little lady snagged unsuspecting insects out of the air and munched them on the spot.

Her parter, with a diagnostic rufous facial patch, watched her, and me, from a nearby tree branch as she threw looks my way. ↟.
These type of things happen only in Danum Valley.
