Our Program

Is a unique and effective addition to your employee enrichment program, please consider our Urban Wildlife Connection.

Your staff will value the opportunity to learn more about a relevant topic, develop a skill that they can use, and to connect in a fun, accessible environment with their co-workers.

We offer 90 min, 2-hour, and 4-hour customizable wildlife team builders focusing on nature connection and sustainability!

Team Benefits

We take the benefits of nature connection a step further and provide your team with tangible skills to bring back to the workplace.

By learning to listen to birds we are training our minds to focus intently on the moment, filtering out superfluous stimuli. These exercises are geared to increase your team’s listening ability in a professional setting; thus promoting communication, cohesive collaboration, and ultimately a more productive and engaged staff.

Urban Wildlife?

This may seem like a contradiction, but our urban areas are full of wildlife waiting to be discovered! One of the most accessible forms of wildlife are birds, and no we don’t just mean pigeons at the park. We’re talking about a whopping 547 different species of birds reported from Los Angeles county alone!

Bird Watching as a mindfulness tool

Bird watching or birding, is a multi-sensory experience, inviting our focus and demanding our attention. Alert to the moment of now, birding is the definition of mindfulness. While we uncover the veil of bird communication, amongst the mosaic of green and fresh air, we train our senses to be more aware of the moment, our thoughts of the future become grounded in the present.

Before you realize it, you are relaxed, engaged and experiencing a world that you never knew existed!

BIRDING

With interesting behaviors, bright colors, curious adaptations, and multi-national migrations, we’re excited to share the magic of birding with you and your team.

Although invisible to most, birds as it turns out, are abundant, found almost everywhere, and places like Los Angeles are chock full of them.

Now, we’re not just talking about pigeons, we’re talking about a whopping 547 different species of birds reported in LA County alone, the highest reported from any county in the United States!

Native Plants

The key to supporting native wildlife is to support the ecosystems they rely on to survive.  Although it would seem like common sense, most people don’t fully understand the importance and simplicity of incorporating native plants to your local area.

Whether you live in an apartment, have a big yard, or are eager to incorporate native plants in your business park we’ve got answers for you.

By partnering with local experts we deliver the tools and resources you need to encourage wildlife in your neighborhood to stop by and grab a bite to eat!

Sustainability Steps

Everyday we make simple choices when we purchase or consume products, but it turns out not all of those choices were created equally.

Here we’ll explore topics like; Elevate Your Brew: Bird Friendly Coffee, Beyond Plastics: 10 Easy Solutions, Palm Oil: Tropical and Topical, Birds and Buildings: A Crash Course, and of course we’ll have some tasty treats  to try first hand.

We’ll share some simple steps that will surprise and inspire you!

What is the Urban Wildlife Connection?

The URBAN WILDLIFE CONNECTION COMBINES THE BENEFITS OF education and connection. The program utilizes traditional BIRD WATCHING skills, enhancing sensitivity to internal signals and sharpening focus on the external world, facilitating the active engagement of participants.

Education about the environment and the opportunity to share observations in the group creates a unique platform for your employees to enjoy nature, deepen their knowledge of their everyday environment, and access skills to destress. It also engages observational skills and awareness.

But seriously, Bird Watching?

Seriously. Yes!

THIS MODERN TAKE ON A TIME-HONORED TRADITION, BRINGS with it ALL THE PROVEN BENEFITS OF BIRD WATCHING INCLUDING; STRESS RELIEF, IMPROVED CREATIVITY, CONNECTION TO NATURE, AND MANY, HAVE INCORPORATED BIRDING INTO THEIR OWN MINDFULNESS PRACTICE.

ON THE MOST BASIC LEVEL, BIRDING IS INCLUSIVE, EXCITING, LOW-COST, DOESN’T REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND CAN BE DONE VIRTUALLY ANYWHERE WITH ANYONE.

What can we expect?

Participants can expect a customized experience facilitated by a birding and wildlife expert and professional group leader whose FACILITATION STYLE IS WARM, INVITING, AND FUN. The session begins with an overview of the environment where the walk takes place and the easily acquired basics of bird watching. The participants in your group will be amazed by their ability to quiet their minds and to tune into previously unheard sounds and unseen avian friends. Spontaneous conversations are natural and add to the excitement of the group. The lively conversation is fueled by BIRDS by BJIS founder Benny Jacobs-Schwartz, who brings color and focus to the excursion.

What is the intersection of birding and mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness of the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.

Bird watching is a great tool to awaken one’s senses, as you stalk, listen, watch, and feel for birds as we explore a habitat. Each experience promotes your ability to be present and attend to the once invisible details of nature. By focusing so acutely on the moment, the dynamics of birding fully engages you in the present moment as your focus is absorbed while you connect with outdoor spaces and the local wildlife that inhabit them.

The group will be encouraged to notice the environment and tune into the sights, sounds and smells around them. Armed with an orientation to size, shape, beak distinctions and typical calls, participants will use their tuned awareness to spot birds who have been hiding in plain sight.

What’s the ideal group size?

After leading bird and wildlife viewing events in places as diverse as the Amazon to Alaska for years, we’ve found that groups ranging in size from 10-20 receive the most benefit from our Urban Wildlife Connection programs.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHERE YOU GO?

DEPENDING ON WHAT PACKAGE SUITS YOUR NEEDS BEST WE CAN KEEP IT LOCAL BY THE OFFICE, HEAD TO A NEARBY GREENSPACE, OR EVEN DO A WEEKEND STYLE RETREAT AT A DESTINATION OF OUR CHOOSING.

Wanna hear our most common responses?

We invite you to step outside with Benny and experience your everyday world through a new lens. In a relatively short amount of time you will have skills to hear, see and relate to the wonders right outside your door.

“Wow! I had no idea this place was here!”
“This is so exciting!”
“I never expected to see so many different types of birds!”
“I can’t wait to check out the birds in my neighborhood”

These are some of the most common responses from participants after their first outing into local wildlife habitats with Benny.

Sepulveda Wildlife Reserve, Franklin Canyon Park, Malibu Lagoon, Echo Park, and Ballona Wetlands are just some of the many pockets of natural habitat in the greater LA Basin, which offers a refuge to wildlife, and which can offer you a refuge from your daily stress or weekend routine.

While you may have heard of some of these spots, when did you last have the opportunity to spend an hour destressing, really tuning in to the sights and sounds around you and connecting with your fellow co-workers?
