We had a blast exploring the Bolsa Chica Wetlands

We had a blast exploring the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and Ecological Preserve!
✨✨✨
This is one the premier salt-marsh habitats in Southern California and plays a critical role for breeding birds like threatened species Least Tern and Snowy Plover. It also is a hugely important spot for migrating shorebirds and overwintering waterfowl traveling along the Pacific Flyway.
✨✨✨
Over our 2 hour adventure we observed 53 different species!

Highlights included California Gnatcatcher, Reddish Egret, Black-headed Grosbeak, American Avocet, Redhead, Forster’s, Royal and Caspian Tern! We also got to see both Brown Pelican and the massive American White Pelican!
✨✨✨
Big thanks to everyone who came and brought all the fun birdy vibes!

On Sunday a dozen of us gathered to learn all abou

On Sunday a dozen of us gathered to learn all about birds and explore the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Preserve, a hidden gem in the San Fernando Valley!
✨✨✨
We had some experienced birders, first timers and folks in-between!
✨✨✨
We made a nice loop around the wildlife lake looking and listening for resident and migratory birds! Although we weren’t able to locate the rare Eastern Kingbird everyone was able to check out the Least Bittern thats been hanging around recently!
✨✨✨
In total we observed 35 different species and had a blast connecting, observing and exploring nature together!
✨✨✨
Thanks to everyone who came out, and I look forward to seeing folks next Sunday, 9/24 at Bolsa Chica Wetlands for what is always a great time!

Painted Feather Birding Club is back in the field

Painted Feather Birding Club is back in the field after our summer break! 🌈✨🦜✌️

Today we met up and explored the Malibu Lagoon!
✨✨✨
We managed to observe 50 different species with highlights including Peregrine Falcon, Vaux’s Swift, Brant and a rare Common Tern!
✨✨✨
Other beauties present included Wrentit, Black-bellied Plover, Marbled Godwit, Whimbrel, Brown Pelican, Surfbird, at Elegant Tern, Royal tern, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Great-blue Heron and Eared Grebe!
✨✨✨
Always great to out be in nature soaking up all the vibes!
✨✨✨

Owls have mastered the ability to mask the sounds of flight!
✨✨✨
They have sound-dampening structures which allow them to fly without making any sound!

Here’s how:

The structure of their feathers serves as a silencer. As air moves across their wings comb-like serrations on the leading edge break up the air that would normally make a “swoosh” sound. This air is further silenced as it moves across a soft fringe on the wing’s trailing edge, contributing to nocturnal owls unbelievable arsenal of adaptations.
✨✨✨
So next time someone tells you they heard an owl flyby, it might just be the night playing tricks on them, because these accomplished hunters don’t make a peep in flight!
✨✨✨
