In total we observed 59 species, 28 of which were lifers for them!
✨✨✨
We had a blast exploring a few of my favorite hotspots in the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica Mtns!

Last Friday I had an incredible opportunity to lead a Birding Workshop as a professional development training for the incredible folks @matilija_escuelabosque !!
✨✨✨
We met at their favorite classroom and got into the basics of bird identification, how to use binoculars, and then explored the area for birds!
✨✨✨
We lucked out and we saw SO MANY BIRDS!
✨✨✨
In total we observed 34 species with highlights including; White-throated Swift, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Phainopepla, Red-shouldered & Red-tailed Hawk and the icing on the cake was getting to observe a whole family of Great-horned Owls!
✨✨✨
Huge thanks to Claudia their Founder/Director for reaching out and making it happen! Can’t wait for the next one!
✨✨✨

Today we had an awesome event at the Ventura Settling Ponds with @patagoniavta , @birdsbybijs and some of our local community members!

We explored this local birding “hotspot” where we had the opportunity to meet 36 different species of birds including how to identify them by sight and sound, as well the science behind bird song, migration, and so much more!

We lucked out with the cool weather and spotted many new species of birds from her target list!
✨✨✨
Most of which were beautiful neotropical migrants including:

Lazuli Bunting - her most wanted target!

One of the first birds I observed upon arrival @sani_lodge was this massive black cuckoo called a Greater Ani.
✨✨✨
At sunset a large group of about 30 individuals streamed gracefully across the lagoon, landing amongst the Elephant Ears plants that line the edge of this amazonian body of water.
✨✨✨
It was cool to see these guys again after tracking down Groove-billed and Smooth-billed Ani’s in Miami last month with Alexa ❤️
✨✨✨

While the kids played in the crystal clear waters I sat listening to the sounds of the cloud forest.
✨✨✨
A few moments later, out of the corner of my eye I noticed a hummingbird land a few meters away.
✨✨✨
It sat quietly on a thin branch above the water, immediately I knew who it was.
✨✨✨
Excitedly I reached into my backpack and began composing an image of the gorgeous Green-fronted Lancebill!
✨✨✨
This is the closed I’ve been to one, and by far the best photos I’ve captured of this deep forest stream-side lover!

Species Highlight: Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica)
✨✨✨
Today were featuring one of the incredible hummingbird species found in Ecuador and the new world tropics!
✨✨✨
This glittering gem is found from Belize to Guatemala and south to Peru!
✨✨✨
Normally found in middle to understory habitats where it can be observed in evergreen forests and edge habitats in tropical lowlands and the lower ranges of cloud forests.
✨✨✨
They feed mainly at low to middle levels in shady understory, which can make it a challenging subject to photograph well due to the low light it hides in.
✨✨✨
Like many hummingbird species the Crowned Woodnymph is sexually dimorphic, with the male males brightly clad in iredescent green, blue and purple feathers.
✨✨✨
If you’re interested in seeing this species in person we’ll have great chances to see them on my birding tours next year!
✨✨✨

Yesterday during our 8 mile hike from the top of Q

Yesterday during our 8 mile hike from the top of Quilotoa Crater back to our hostal, our group spotted a Sparkling Violetear in the field!
✨✨✨
The plant this dazzling hummer was foraging on is called Puya glomifera, and Ecuadorian endemic in the Bromeliacae family.
✨✨✨
This plant is found in the upper reaches of the Ecuadorian Andes and is a food resource for the Spectacled Bear, a large omnivore that also lives in pristine stretches of Paramo habitat.
✨✨✨
I find it beautiful learning about the interconnection between a small colorful pollinator, the large hardy bromeliad, and the illusive Spectacled Bear. Their lives are all interconnected and dependent upon each other for their survival. Unfortunately much of the paramo habitat has been converted to agriculture, stripping the landscape of its native flora, placing an even greater importance to preserve and conserve what remains!

Lifer Alert: Black-whiskered Vireo 🖤
✨✨✨
On my last day in Florida, Alexa and I slept in a bit, woke up without our alarm and made our way over to Key Biscane to try for a bird that had been reported the day prior.
✨✨✨
The casual wakeup is not normally our birding style, but we’d been rising and grinding on birds for nearly two-weeks and we needed to recharge our batteries a bit.
✨✨✨
When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to finally see some migrants like the Worm-eating Warbler and this lifer Black-whiskered Vireo!
✨✨✨
We got some good looks, snapped a few pics in the dense mangrove and sea grape woodland and bounced out in an attempt to avoid getting anymore mosquito bites.
✨✨✨
I’m now back in Ecuador leading a three-week teen trip for @humannatureexpeditions! Im stoked to be back leading trips for young people and to of course be back in one of the places I love dearly!
