This tour is an outstanding introduction to the endemic birds of Hispaniola and the diverse habitats of the Dominican Republic. It is especially well suited for birders who want a focused Caribbean endemic experience paired with scenic landscapes, comfortable travel, and a strong chance at many of the island’s most desirable species.
Arrival into Santo Domingo (SDQ). After arrival, transfer to our hotel and settle in for the evening.
We begin with birding in productive green spaces and wetlands in and around Santo Domingo, an excellent introduction to the birds of the Dominican Republic. This relaxed first day gives us the chance to enjoy a mix of wetland birds, urban green space specialties, and several widespread island species while easing into the pace of the tour.
Possible highlights include Ridgway’s Hawk, West Indian Whistling-Duck, Hispaniolan Woodpecker, Palmchat, and American Redstart.
Today we head west toward the southwestern Dominican Republic, making selected birding and scenic stops along the way. This day gives us our first taste of the country’s coastal habitats, roadside birding, and lowland specialties, while also setting us up for the core endemic birding section of the tour.
We expect a good mix of common island birds, coastal species, and our first southwestern specialties.
We continue birding through the southwest, exploring a combination of dry forest, lowland scrub, and coastal wetland systems. This is one of the most scenic days of the tour, with opportunities to enjoy striking Caribbean landscapes while searching for waterbirds, palm swifts, herons, warblers, and regional specialties.
This part of the route offers a wonderful contrast to the city and lowland birding at the start of the trip and gives us a broader feel for the island’s ecological diversity.
Today we focus on the lower slopes and foothill habitats associated with the Sierra de Bahoruco. This is an important day for several endemic and regional specialties, especially parrots, crows, and dry forest birds. Habitat transitions throughout the day often produce a rewarding mix of species, from open country and scrub to more wooded foothill areas.
Standout possibilities include Hispaniolan Amazon, Hispaniolan Parakeet, Hispaniolan Palm-Crow, and Hispaniolan Crossbill.
This is one of the key birding days of the tour. We head into the highlands of the Sierra de Bahoruco, one of the Dominican Republic’s most important birding regions and one of the top endemic birding sites in the Caribbean. The higher-elevation pine and broadleaf forests here support many of Hispaniola’s most sought-after birds.
This is our best opportunity for special highland endemics and other major tour targets such as Hispaniolan Trogon, Antillean Siskin, White-fronted Quail-Dove, Hispaniolan Spindalis, and Bay-breasted Cuckoo.
Our final morning gives us one last opportunity for local birding near Santo Domingo before departures. Depending on timing, we may visit nearby green spaces, wetlands, or coastal viewpoints for a final chance at a few missed birds before heading to the airport.
Flights are best scheduled for later in the day.
