The Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia is the endem

The Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia is the endemic hotspot of South America!

This epic mountain range is home to highest density of endemics birds in the Southern Hemisphere!

Join me in August 2025 to search for all of the endemics plus the unique and range restricted birds of the dry acacia forest of La Guajira range!

Yesterday I had a fantastic day birding with my de

Yesterday I had a fantastic day birding with my dear friends Laurie and Jim!

I drove out Rancho Cucamonga, which is about 45 minutes east of me here in LA!

We birded the chaparral and got fantastic looks at singing sparrows, raging waterfalls, and had a delicious lunch at their beautiful home! During lunch we spotted a Hooded Oriole in their yard, a bird Laurie wanted to see today, and what better day to see on than on your birthday!

Happy birthday Laurie! See you both again soon, and see you on my Costa Rica Northern Region tour Jan 3-11, 2025!

Despite all the rain last night, LA got a nice rep

Despite all the rain last night, LA got a nice reprieve during the day! 🌦️
✨✨✨
As soon as I woke up and saw it wasnt raining, out I went!
✨✨✨
It was glorious in the chaparral and sage scrub!
Take a look at some of the day’s highlights!

1. Black-headed Grosbeak likely passing through
2. Thick-billed Kingbird has been wintering in LA, nice year bird and local rarity
3. Moody look from the kingbird
4. Spotted Towhee was teed up nicely on the perch
5. Rufous-crowned Sparrow, another sweet year bird!
6. California Thrasher - one of my all time faves
